Golden Gate Bridge from the Marin HeadlandsThe San Francisco Bay Area Podiatric Surgical Residency Program is an integrated, multi-facility three-year surgical residency program with a strong academic component.  Residents will receive comprehensive foot and ankle surgical training with emphasis on limb salvage, forefoot and rearfoot reconstruction and trauma.  Residents will also receive extensive clinical experience encompassing all aspects of foot and ankle care.

The comprehensive goals of the program are:

  • Provide the podiatric surgical resident with the didactic knowledge, clinical and surgical experience to achieve competence as highly skilled, ethical forefoot and reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgeon.
  • Provide the resident with the knowledge and skills to practice the full scope of advanced Podiatric Surgery
  • Develop the residents critical thinking, understanding of research methodology, and research skills.
  • Develop the residents understanding of cultural, ethnic and socioecominic diversity of patients.
  • Develop the residents knowledge and experience in physician-patient communication skills.
  • Develop the residents lecture preparation and oral presentation skills.
  • Provide the resident with the attitude, confidence and competence to be successful in any healthcare environment or practice.

The three-year program offers extensive instruction in various medical specialties, and the development of outstanding skills in the surgical and conservative management of foot and ankle pathology. Residents also attend a monthly grand rounds, journal club and lecture series to enhance their learning experience.  Upon completion of the residency program residents will have a broad base of clinical and surgical experience to bring to an active private practice, group practice or academic medicine setting.

Every year three residents are selected to participate in the three-year podiatric surgical residency program. The program is accredited by the Council on Podiatric Medical Education as a PSR-24 program.



The mission of the San Francisco Bay Area Foot & Ankle Residency Program is to develop highly skilled physicians who specialize in foot and ankle care and to promote educational excellence throughout the medical community.
